Motorola MOTOROKR E6

Navigation is simple, with a vibrant 2.6 inch display that sports 256k of color and large icons. It also has a 2 megapixel camera that has an option of landscape and portrait that can be selected using a switch near the lens. The phone can also be used as a webcam by hooking it up to your PC. The phone itself is quite slim, but a wee bit on a the heavy side. The MOTOROKR is available in two different packages—the Premium and the Delux.

The MOTOROKR’s primary feature is supposed to be the MP3 player. At least that’s what the advertisement on TV will have you believe. However Motorola has equipped this phone with a lot more than just a simple mp3 player.

It uses the same Linux interface as the MOTOMING A1200, with a few additions. The E6 also has a touch screen but considering it doesn’t have a flip to protect the screen, a screen lock switch is provided for the same. The ROKR is also A2DP compatible.

Yahoo Mail Announces Unlimited Storage

Yahoo is announcing that all Yahoo Mail users will have free unlimited email storage starting in May 2007. The current storage limit is 1 GB per account (2 GB for $20/year premium users). With this change, Yahoo leapfrogs Gmail (2.8 GB and growing) and Live.com Mail (2GB). Yahoo mail currently has 250 million global users, more than any other online service (Live.com has 228 million and Gmail has 51 million users). See this feature by feature comparison of the services for more information.

I spoke with Yahoo’s Vice President of Mail, John Kremer, this afternoon about the announcement. He says the new storage limits (or rather lack of a limit) affect all Yahoo mail users, not just users of the new beta product.

Users are subject to Yahoo’s abuse policies, which requires users to follow “normal email practices” and not engage in activities like using Yahoo mail for basic online storage (a number of services have popped up to help people use Gmail for this purpose). Abusive accounts will not be summarily deleted – users will be notified by Yahoo and/or accounts suspended, but users will still have access to the data.

Kremer says they want their customers to be satisfied and happy with the new unlimited storage feature. Users who have paid $20 to upgrade to a premium account to get 2 GB of storage will be able to get a refund if they request one.
Interesting historical information: Yahoo mail will be ten years old soon. When it launched in 1997 it included a whopping 4 MB of total storage. This was increased to 100 MB in 2004, and 1 GB in 2005.

Is Yahoo Mail now the best webmail product? Not in my opinion, even with this announcement. It has the best and fastest user interface (although many users prefer Gmail), but does not support IMAP, and POP access and forwarding are premium features (Gmail offers POP access and forwarding for free). Gmail also allows tagging of emails, a feature I find extremely useful for organizing archived mail. Still, the Yahoo Mail team seems up for a fight, and their massive lead over Gmail isn’t going anywhere soon. My bet is that more features are coming soon.

Nokia E65 VoIP Smartphone Photos Leaked

Another phone leaks on the web and this time it’s from your favorite Nokia! Here’s what’s being called an E65, a slider form factor handset with some new buttons on the front, which are dedicated for VoIP calls — a first in the Finnish portfolio. The phone also has WiFi support, so there’s obviously a way to make VoIP calls via WiFi, without requiring an operator network.

The phone has a 2 megapixel camera and some sort of a fake leather grip on the rear (hopefully). The phone is also expected to be ultra slim at just 1.4cm. A RAZR thin slider, or should we say, a RIZR thin phone from Nokia? Wow!

Other features of the phone include a large, high-resolution 352×416 display, 70mb of internal memory, microSD/TransFlash card slot, running SymbianOS Series 60 UI. The phone is a quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE phone with support for 3G/WCDMA/UMTS. Personal connectivity is fully covered: Bluetooth, WiFI 802.11b/g, IrDA and USB 2.0, unfortunately via the proprietary pop port. The phone is expected to be out by the second or third quarter of the year with a price tag of around Rs. 20,000.

PDA with GPS set for launch

ASUS has released the P535 triband PDA phone which offers a comprehensive spread of business and lifestyle applications, WiFi functionality, GPS, and a high quality autofocus camera. Priced at around Rs 35,000, the company claims it to be India’s first PDA phone to have GPS support.

The 520MHz Intel XScale-powered P535 has a 2.8in (240 x 320pixels, 65,000 colours) TFT screen, and uses the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system and has a full suite of multimedia playback software.

The hybrid device also comes with 256MB NAND Flash ROM and 64MB RAM on board, with a MiniSD card slot allowing storage capacity to be increased.
P535 tri-band PDA phone incorporates full wireless functionality, GPS and high quality auto-focus camera in a compact formfactor.

The P535 helps the business executive stay connected while on the move, offering push email, Internet access, off-site synchronization of calendar and contact information over wireless or mobile phone GPRS networks.

Originally developed for military use, Global Positioning System now has a wide range of civilian applications, for both work and play. Navigating appointment venues in a foreign land, tracking distance and speeds on road trips, treks or while jogging – the P535 offers the wonders of GPS in a compact, handy formfactor.

The P535’s integrated auto-focus 2.0 megapixel camera is not only capable of high quality pictures, it’s also a business card scanner, picking up contact details off photographed business cards in a snap – especially convenient when attending business conventions.

ASUS has packed the P535 with proprietary user-friendly software and features. Among the most useful, is the Secret Folder, through which the user can encrypt and protect sensitive personal or business information from prying eyes. Underlying the P535’s many features, is the Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system, the leading mobile platform with plenty of support and software available, full suite of multimedia playback functionality, and most importantly, the reliance on flash memory: data stored in the P535 remains stored, even if the P535 has lost all power.

The tentative plans are to launch this phone later this month in India along with the appointment of a new national distributor for this product.
